The Upper Hand - September 2020

After experiencing several days when degrees up and down the country hit mid-thirties, the weather now seems to be turning and the evenings are getting noticeably shorter… Conversations are moving onto schools re-opening for all students, the barbeques are being cleaned down and packed away, and our food and drink choices will no doubt start changing too…

So, now is a good time to start thinking about your autumn menus across both food, hot and cold drinks, and any wines you serve as part of your selection…

• As we head into autumn, comfort food starts reappearing on people’s wish lists, and seasonal veg move from salad ingredients towards root vegetables. Pasta dishes, roasts and soups are easy options to help add these seasonal nuances to your menu…

• With Brexit yet again a key topic of conversation, and with British Food Fortnight taking place from 19th September to 04th October, buying and serving British products and ingredients will be in the spotlight, and this is worth considering as you plan your autumn menu. How about adding the ever-popular apple pie to your puddings menu, using apples grown right here in the UK?

• And don’t forget to consider your drinks menu – should your rose be replaced with a merlot, your iced coffee with a pumpkin-spiced latte?

We don’t mean to cut summer short, and September often has lovely days of sunshine, too – but starting your planning now helps you adapt as soon as the weather dictates the need for it.

There are, of course, popular seasonal events on the cards, too, like Halloween and Christmas – look out for more inspiration for these in our October and November blogs….
