A powerful nose of ripe, vibrant blackberries and plums is supported by a supple seam of vanilla. The palate is medium bodied with fine grained tannins. It’s filled with flavours of brambles, forest, cinnamon and nutmeg and has a lingering toastiness on the finish.
Here in the UK we have a real thirst for Rioja; records of barrels of it being bought and consumed by the royals go back to Henry VIII. It seems that he not only had a penchant for wives but also Spain's most famous wine. Despite a myriad of wine regions, 60% of Spanish wine sales belong to Rioja and the UK is the region's number one export country. This is made in the more modern, fruit forward style and has become the number one selling Crianza in its home country. With careful use of oak to add layers of complexity, this is superbly balanced and rich and will be perfect with roast lamb.
Rodolfo Bastida, Bailbao's technical director, took the helm in 1999 at the tender age of 31. A native of the region, he was born in Logroño and studied technical agricutural engineering and viticulture and oenology. He has become one of Spain's leading winemakers and is pioneering the concept of high altitude grape growing in Rioja. It is Rodolfo who has helped Ramón Bilbao establish their trademark style and made them a benchmark for quality in the region.
